Other parts of the world where the GS/GSA was sold Europe In all countries of this continent the GS and GSA was initially sold as a new car. Even in some countries (GDR and Yugoslavia) in Eastern Europe during the time of the cold war. After the cold war a lot of GSAs where exported to Eastern Europe, since the demand for second hand `western` cars was very high. I know of GSAs in Romania, Hungary, Czech, Slovakia and Russia. Greece is also a country where a lot of used GS/GSA where exported too. Australia and New Sealand Australia was also a market in which Citroën introduced the GS. Although the GS was not a high seller, mainly due to the high taxes on imported cars. There where quite a few sold. All the Australian GSs where Grand Exportation vehicles. WHich means they where adjusted to the warmer climate and heaveier conditions in which they had to operate. Nowadays many of the GSs still exist, mainly due to the good climate, the cars rust less.
United States and Canada In the US the GS was never officially imported, the same applies for Canada. Before the Early seventies Citroën did had official resellers in the United States, but by the mid seventies all the business in the US was closed down. There was however a prototype of a GS for the US market. To meet the severe US safety regulations, some adjustements had to be made (quad headlight, thicker bumpers). However it never came to an official approval, so the GS remains unautorized in the United States. However there are few cars imported the unofficial way, so there are a few driving around in the US and Canada.
South America The GS was at least available in Uruguay, Argentina and Bolivia, In Chile there was even an assembly line. Some 2500 GSs where assembled between 1979 and 1981.
Africa In Africa there where three countries which produced GSs, although production is a great word, since most of it was local assembly of imported parts. These countries where South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In South Africa, some 1305 GSs where assembled. That is in my opinion not the total of sales, since the assembly lines didn't last the full lifetime of the GS. So probally more where sold outthere. Continue here to read a story in Dutch I wrote for the magazine of the Dutch GS Vereniging about GSses in South Africa. Of the two other countries I know to little to say anything about sale of GSs. In other parts of Africa, like Zambia and Tunesia GSs and GSAs are sighted. So there is a chance to run into a GS/GSA there. Asia Next to Indonesia where GSs where produced, the GS was also sold in other parts of Asia. Japan, Vietnam, Thailand are places where you can run into a GS. In Thailand there was even a small assembly line for a few years. Although the production figures did not exceed 1000 cars. ![]() The air inlet on the hood shows this car has airconditioning Japan In Japan the GS is available from the early seventies. The cars are shipped in from Europe, although there where also production facilities in Asia. A company named Seibu did the resale in Japan. Japanese cars are LHD cars, somewhat remarkable as they also drive left on the road. I am not sure of the available types in Japan, but the GS was at least available as Club and Pallas. The GSA also came as Club and Pallas and for the years 1984 and 1985 also as X3. There is one remarkable thing to the Japanese GSA Pallas, they could cam with airco. The airco was fitted localy and for extra cooling an air inlet was created in the hood.
